Characteristics of Hungarian language

Hungarian is the official and primary language spoken in Hungary. It is also one of the European Union’s primary and official 24 languages. In addition to being spoken in Hungary, it is also spoken by the Hungarian diaspora in a number of expat communities worldwide including by approximately 3 million in Romania / Transylvania.

It is quite unique in its formation in that it does not belong to the Indo-European family of languages which is also the case for both Estonian and Finnish. The language has its roots in the Uralic region of Asia. Hungarian is one of the four national languages of Europe that is not an Indo-European language. The other three are Estonian and Finnish, which are also Uralic languages, and Basque which is spoken in the South West of France and Northern Spain. Hungarian has been influenced by German due to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Although the grammar is fairly complex, there is no gender. As with English, it’s possible to change the order of the words in a sentence to mean the same thing.

Short history of the Hungarian language

With a history that goes back to the year 1000BC, Hungarian is known as Magyar. The language is though to have begun in Iran and then the Hungarians moved to the Carpathian Basin. At that time they were influenced by a number of different languages including German, turkic, Slavic and Romanian. Approximately 1.6% of the Romanian language is thought to be from the Hungarian language.

The first book to be written comploetely in Hungarian is thought to be from the year 1533. The language uses the Roman alphabet and has 25 consonants and 14 vowels.
